SF 2286 – Regulation of Mixed Martial Arts Matches and Events
FLOOR ACTION:
SF 2286 places the regulation of amateur and professional mixed martial arts matches and events under the authority of the state’s Labor Commissioner. The law will require a contestant to pass a prefight physical examination. In addition, a promoter of these matches will be required to have medical support staff at the event. The bill allows the Labor Commissioner to impose civil penalties not to exceed $10,000 per violation for acting as a promoter without a license. This is a new penalty that can be imposed on promoters of mixed martial arts matches and promoters of boxing and wrestling matches. The Commissioner may issue a cease and desist order to prevent a promoter from holding an unlicensed event or match. In addition, a contestant of mixed martial arts must be at least 18 years of age. This bill was amended by the House to clarify the definition of “mixed martial arts match.” [3/15: 48-0 (Fraise, Hogg excused)]
